The Engine

Medium: DigitalDate: July 2025

> About This Piece

Probably my least favourite work in the RTS 'series,' I was really trying to portray the idea I had in my head, and it just didn't quite work out.

The Engine is the player's (and opponent's) home base. When it gets destroyed, you lose. So, I'm trying to show that this is an important thing.

On the other hand, it's not a unit-making facility. In the game project I'm working on, your units drop in from above, to defend your engine and destroy your opponent's. So I was also trying to make sure you can understand it's not the classic 'barracks' structure.

The Engine is supposed to be a half-living half-fabricated thing, so I wanted it to look very 'mashed together,' that's something I think I did accomplish.

> Process

This one started with the front of the building, the doorway specifically. I knew if I wanted this to be a home, it had to look inviting.

When I finished the front and started the side, I decided I wanted it to be 'folding in' on itself, but I'm not sure if I managed to get that across very well.

The top room and rear steeple came next, but the top didn't have its details like the antenna or connecting pipe.

Then is when I added the living roof idea, and it was actually quite fast, the final piece here is almost the first attempt at how to shape the drooping stuff. I decided to cover the rear steeple at the time, like the roof is over there too, but now I'm not so sure.

The top room details came next, then finally I added on the left chimney. The piece was kind-of 'leaning' to the right a bit too much.

> What I Learned

I'm not really sure. Like I said at the beginning, I don't really like how this one turned out, but when I started the concept art for the game I decided to just try it, just go with whatever I made. Maybe I'll come back to them all someday.
