The Mute

Medium: DigitalDate: June 2025

> About This Piece

The Mute was the second character idea I tried to capture, and it came from the same game design.

The Mute as a unit is a scout in-game, very light, very easily destroyed, and a little mysterious. I think I captured that okay.

> Process

This one took a long time. I started without the cloak, and drew the underlying figure as general shapes. They didn't have feet for a while, though.

I was trying to pursue a feeling of 'not quite right' with this character. I wanted to convey that the Mute is... strange, in every sense of the word.

The face came second, after the body, and originally (before I added the cloak) was directly attached.

I started the cloak by doing the hood, segmented with layers, around the face. This was one I made the mistake of covering the body-layer, and didn't notice until after I had declared the piece 'done.'

After the hood, I was trying to figure out how to best flow the cloak. I started on the right-hand side, by following where I thought it might fall around the Mute's left 'shoulder.' Then I moved out from there, to create the 'cave' shape that I could pull down to the other side of the image.

I'm still not totally happy with the joining point, where the foreground and background cloak pieces meet, but oh-well.

The radio pack was the finishing touch, I felt like the peak of the hood should be pointing at something, so something was added!

> What I Learned

I think I learned a bit more about 'organic' shapes with this piece. I think it really does look like a hovering, wraith-like figure. I think the cloak needs some work, just some detailing around the final segment, but overall happy with how this turned out.
