> About This Piece
This was my first attempt at capturing an idea I came up with for a game's character.
I wanted to show this idea of a machine that was really modular, like pieces of it had been 'tacked together'
The pioneer was envisioned as an offensive RTS unit, but one that's quite fragile—which I tried to portray with a general 'flimsy' quality.
> Process
Started with the flag idea, and worked outward from there. I wanted the pioneer to be 'on a mission' to capture territory for their team.
I'm still not sure about the cable connection in the background, but I wanted some way of showing 'how' this thing would move, even in stillness. It's meant to be a very 'piece-by-piece' motion, very steampunk.
The torso/head spent most of the drawing time as a sort-of amorphous blob. All the limbs came first, quite easily, since I was mostly just trying to make them look the same as each other.
The rear spike-launcher was originally going to be inspired by a sort of 'quiver' design. That fell apart however, leaving our Pioneer with just the one ranged-shot.
> What I Learned
A lot about posing. The character feels decidedly like their going somewhere, and it mostly came down to how many times I redrew their right leg, to be just a little more extended.
